Founded in 1901, Carmel Presbyterian Church is the oldest Black Presbyterian congregation in Ohio. Carmel’s story began even earlier, in 1897, when First Presbyterian Church—now Covenant-First Presbyterian Church—worked with an African American student from Lane Seminary to establish an outreach mission among Cincinnati’s African American community. That mission grew into Carmel Presbyterian Church, beginning with a small but faithful congregation.

The Reverend J. E. Harper served as Carmel’s first pastor. After his departure in 1909, the congregation continued meeting in various locations while holding firmly to its faith and vision. In 1911, the Reverend W. H. Brean became pastor and helped lead Carmel toward securing a permanent home.

In 1919, Carmel built a church at Ninth and Linn Streets in Cincinnati’s West End. The building was constructed by African American contractors—an extraordinary accomplishment during that time. Carmel became more than a place of Sunday worship; it became a center of spiritual life, fellowship, service, and opportunity for the surrounding community.

Under the leadership of the Reverend B. B. Evans, who served for 20 years, Carmel experienced significant growth. The congregation developed numerous ministries, a recreation and community center, youth activities, and a trailblazing credit union. In 1951, Carmel celebrated its 50th anniversary under the theme “The Year of Jubilee.”

That season of growth was followed by another major transition. In the 1950s, Carmel’s church and recreation center were demolished as part of urban renewal to make way for Interstate 75. Like thousands of other African American families, churches, and businesses in the West End, Carmel was forced to relocate. Through the sadness and uncertainty, the congregation remained committed to one goal: Keep Carmel together.

In 1958, Carmel purchased the First United Presbyterian Church building at Reading Road and Lee Place in Avondale. Under the leadership of pastors including the Reverend Harold L. Hunt, the Reverend Joe-Joseyh Pallikkathayil, and the Reverend Clarence Wallace, Carmel continued to grow spiritually while remaining deeply connected to the community.

Carmel played an active role during the Civil Rights Movement, hosting speakers, meetings, and community gatherings. Its ministries expanded to include a soup kitchen, food pantry, men’s clothing ministry, youth enrichment programs, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, Sunday breakfasts, fellowship meals, and summer programs for children and teenagers.

Carmel also developed meaningful partnerships with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and other community organizations. These partnerships supported early childhood development, provided formula and diapers to families, encouraged parents to read to their babies, and offered assistance to children and families throughout the community. Carmel’s annual Christmas outreach has continued through partnerships with neighboring churches.

In April 2025, Carmel entered another new beginning by moving its worship services to the chapel at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church. Once again, the location changed, but the congregation’s faith and determination remained strong.

Today, Carmel continues to worship, study God’s Word, pray together, serve the community, and seek new ways to strengthen relationships across generations. We honor the members and leaders who built this church, served their neighbors, stood for justice, and kept Carmel together through every season.

Carmel’s history is a story of faith, resilience, service, and new beginnings. As we embrace this next chapter, we remain committed to honoring our legacy while building a hopeful future together.
